Wow… there is, indeed, no joy in Mudville as Commissioner Bud Selig won’t overturn botched call made by Jim Joyce that cost Tigers’ pitcher Armando Galagarra his perfect game in last night’s Tigers/Indians game, although he did support the increased use of instant-replay technology to prevent such events in the future.
Thanks Bud, I bet that means a lot to Galagarra, who through no fault of his own, lost out on a world record. Nor does it help Joyce, who can now go down in MLB History for the one great mistake he made, even though he has more than apologized for it; even though Galagarra himself has forgiven him, and holds him blameless.
What would it take to set this right? Not much, Bud. It would take you righting an obvious wrong. It wouldn’t have to be a precedent-setting ruling. You could say “Just this once, not for the Law, but for the Justice of it” and, thereafter, make use of instant-reply to make sure it doesn’t happen again. It’s not like this case isn’t an obvious, universally-acknowledge wrong deal.
