I hate to say anything nice about McDonalds (or any fast food chain), but the French “Gay McDonalds Ad” sweeping through the internet actually made me smile. Not for McDonalds or their Amazon-killing menu, but that, just for a commercial, it was no different to be Gay and at McDonalds as it is to be straight, at the same place.

This is how Social Evolution happens. Not with the chanting and the fighting, but when something is treated as innocuous. Like it’s an everyday thing that some people are gay. Which, of course, it is. Check the video of it here:

What’s also nice is the calls of support for the ad, from around the world. Not just from organizations involved in the continuing struggle for acceptance and human rights issues facing gays globally, but also from media groups, ad agencies, etc.

And, of course, it didn’t make the fringe elements happy at all. Bill O’Reilly complained about it (but probably because the ad wouldn’t let him scrub it in the shower with a loofah sponge) as did more extreme gay rights advocates, who criticized the ad over the fact that the boy hasn’t revealed his sexuality to his Dad.

Well you know, some people just aren’t happy with anything. Imagine what Pat Robertson is thinking/saying right now. I’m sorry, I made a mistake there, supposing that Robertson thinks before he speaks. My bad.

I won’t eat at a McDonalds, but I do like the Gay McDonalds ad.

Maybe I’m jaded from living in SF too long, but it seemed very tame to me. It’s hard to imagine anyone on any side being offended by that.
