I am happy to hear the news that Brian David Mitchell, the Elizabeth Smart kidnapper is going to prison, hopefully for as long as it takes his miserable life to play out. Despite committed efforts on his part to gain a “Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity” verdict by singing hymns, shouting at judges and performing a medley of Christmas Carol hits, Mitchell was been found competent for trial and now has been found guilty of charges of kidnapping, transporting a minor over state lines for purposes of sex. Sadly they couldn’t charge him regarding his awful singing, but what can you do? That’s our legal system.

Elizabeth Smart’s ordeal began in 2002, when she was kidnapped, at knifepoint, by Mitchell who, according to Smart’s and others’ testimony, wanted to have a polygamous marriage, and so carried out that plan by abducting and then enslaving Smart with drugs, alcohol, and brutally raping her, every day. Also helping the prosecution was Mitchell’s wife and (according to her) unwilling partner in crime, Wanda Eileen Barzee.

For nine months Elizabeth Smart endured this treatment until she was recognized on the street. Police were called, and they rescued her and arrested Mitchell and Barzee. Now, over 8 years later, the reprehensible creature that fulfilled every parent’s worst nightmare by stealing away their child in the middle of the night is going to prison, hopefully for life.

To her credit, Smart appeared at the trial, day in and day out, providing strong, competent and clear-headed testimony against Mitchell. Barzee, who earned lesser charges by copping a deal with prosecutors
