Japanese Nuclear Power Plant Meltdown Fears Grow – Authorities Prepare for the Worst (Video)

The headline says it all. Upwards of 200,000 souls have been evacuated from their homes because of extreme potential meltdown problems in Japanese nuclear power plants that are threatening to really get out of control. If Japan’s nuclear reactors fully melt down, or god forbid go critical, we’ve got a real mess on our hands.

For years the mantra of the nuclear power industry has been that “the plants are safe” and “accidents are extremely unlikely”. Well tell that to the folks in Japan right now. Nuclear power is an extremely dangerous way to boil water, even if you can get away with it for long periods of time in many places. The numbers don’t work out. If it’s a human endeavor, and relies on no nasty acts of god to keep running AND excellent planning and execution by pretty much ALL humans involved, otherwise the health and environmental consequences are horrific and extreme, then you’ve got recipe for unmitigated disaster.

Pray we dodge this bullet one more time and then finally wise up and develop something like deep-earth, closed-loop geothermal power plants instead.

Earthquake in Japan, Tsunamis for America’s West Coast?

We all woke up this morning to news of a massive earthquake that hit Japan about 8 hours ago, our time (EST), the biggest such quake in over a century. The death toll currently is only 50 or so people, but that is likely to rise from effects of after-shocks, more than 80 major fires, and even a nuclear power plant that, while not yet leaking radiation, did take significant damage.

The quake also triggered a sizable tsunami that hit Japan’s island of Honshu on the Northeast coast, some 400 miles north of Tokyo. Check out this video for what a ten-foot wall of water can do (please excuse the inappropriate commercial they tacked on to the beginning of the video:

Tsunami warning have been ordered for more than 50 different countries, including Russia and the West Coasts of North, Central and South America. While we are still waiting to see what effect it has on Hawaii, so far the tsunamis that hit the Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia have been relatively minor. However experts say that those areas might have been in low-impact paths, and that other regions could be hit much harder. Currently, Hawaii is on a tsunami alert, with residents moving to higher ground and some hotels evacuating guests or moving them to higher floors. here is a chart showing estimated impact times for the tsunami, following the earthquake.

All of this, of course, comes at a bad time for Japan, which has been suffering from a sluggish economy and the largest debt level of any industrial nation. There has been a run on selling of Yen and Japanese stocks. Hard to say now how hard that will be before it recovers. For now, the government has declared a state of emergency in the northeast section of the country.

For now, our prayers go out to the people hurt in the earthquake in Japan, and the subsequent tsunami. And here’s hoping there is ground high enough for people in areas yet to be hit.
