Time Running Out on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

The sound of time running out on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is sweeter than Christmas music. After a defeat that had more to do with Republican procedure-play rather than truth, justice or the American Way, it looks like the repeal measure has gathered enough votes from reasonable Republicans to pass , because this puts the number of votes for the repeal at 60+ making it filibuster-proof.

In its 17 year existence the only thing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has accomplished is the ruining of the military careers of otherwise outstanding soldiers, sailors pilots, etc. Its substance is made of no more factual cloth than the ban on blacks serving in the military earlier in the 20th century. It’s wrong and it is past time that it went away.

Senate majority Leader Harry Reid intends, should all go as expected, to hold a vote as early as tomorrow. With almost all Democrats, and a handful of brave Republicans planning to vote to pass it, it is almost within reach.
