The last episode of As the World Turns just turns and runs off into the world, taking Suzie from the altar, leaving Jeff, who is secretly in love with his best friend, Spencer. Meanwhile, is that Spencer’s Dad in the church, or the Evil-Twin/Robot from the Future/Ghost that has bedeviled the residents of fair Oakdale… Oakville… what ever.

You know, even news that the ancient soap-opera ATWT wrapped up its 13, 858th episode run with a light-hearted “Gosh! EVERYthing is going to work out for EVERYbody!” wrap-up-the-threads finale doesn’t interest me, as I sit waiting to see if the World Economy tanks, The Tea Party takes over America, or both.

It would’ve been much better to have a plane crash into the hospital, killing or maiming all the main characters, just as they receive news of the meteor-the-size-of-Idaho hurtling towards Earth. And THEN end the series. leave the As the World Turns fans wondering… forever.

None of this As the World Turns to Happiness and Light nonsense. They should have revealed Don Hastings as the Devil. Make Oakdale the Sunnydale that DIDN’T have Buffy save it… that sort of thing.

Still, even if you’re not a fan (psst! I’m not) you do have to give some props to a show that endured for 54 consecutive years, launched the careers of Meg Ryan, Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore. Steve Weber to, but no one cares about Steve Webber. Sorry Steve.

As the World Turns also introduced the first Gay man on daytime soaps back in 1988 and a gay relationship a decade later. of course, the gay relationships fare as well as the hetero examples, but I like that you know?

RIP As the World Turns. May no soap operas fill that empty space.
