Marcia Brady and millions of other once-teens are sad today because of the sudden death of Davy Jones, lead singer of the Beatles-copy TV band the Monkees. He allegedly suffered a heart attack in a Florida hospital.
Mr. Jones was the lead singer for some of the Monkee’s biggest hits, Like Valerie, Daydream Believer, and A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You
The Martin County Sheriff’s Department said that Davy called in Wednesday morning of saying he was feeling bad and having trouble breathing. He never made it to the hospital alive, sadly.
The Monkees were a wildly popular TV band on a show that ran from 1966-68.
Shamelessly ripping off the Beatles, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Micky Dolenz, and Michael Nesmith were music-video revolutionaries and would eventually become a real band. Jimi Hendrix even opened up for them once.
He was the only English member of the band, and never minded the fact that he was often compared unfavorably to the band he blatantly emulated.
“I just wanted to be in the show, fall in love twice in each episode and kiss the girls,” he said in a recent interview.
All the other Monkees members are still alive.
Critics often made unfavorable comparisons between the Monkees and the Beatles, but according to Jones, the Beatles actually liked the band, saying even that Paul McCartney even called him once and told him to send a song to his daughter.
Jones had a few of solo records, in addition to his Monkees material.
He even hooked up with Marcia from the Brady Bunch.
